Spiral stabilization of the spine – SPS (also SM system, Stabilization and mobilization of the spine – SMS) is a method of exercise developed by the Czech doctor Richard Smíšek.
The method stabilizes and mobilizes the spine, is based on practicing long muscle chains in the shape of spirals, which stretch the spine upwards and align it to the central axis. Integrates strengthening, stretching and movement coordination training. Exercise is used to prevent and treat problems with the spine, such as intervertebral disc herniation.
The principle of the method is spiral stabilization of the spine by muscle chains, during natural movement, while walking, running, jumping. The spiral muscle chains tighten the waist area and at the same time create a force in the body that acts upwards, “pulls” the spine upwards and relieves pressure on the vertebrae, discs and reduces muscle tension around the spine. It is a set of exercises that are performed mostly standing with the help of an elastic rope. During exercise, the physiotherapist needs to be supervised to ensure that the exercises are performed correctly, that is, that the correct muscles are involved. The SM system is suitable for all ages, for athletes and non-athletes to prevent as well as treat chronic back pain.
For athletes, it is advisable to add a set to balance the one-sided loading before and after training. Even this exercise system improves performance and reduces muscle fatigue. The only necessary tool is a flexible rope, which can be purchased from us at MEDIKON.

“Dress code” for exercise: tight-fitting clothing that is suitable for exercise and does not restrict movement. Girls can train in shorts, leggings, a t-shirt, tank top or lambada. We recommend shorts and a t-shirt for boys. This is the only way we are able to check the correctness of performing individual exercises, which is very important for patients with scoliosis.
